THE ROOTS RESULT OF MY GROWING MEDIUM

Updated: Jan 11, 2020

Mineraland Gritty mix 33%, kanuma33% and akadama 34%.

I've been collecting haworthia for about 3 years now and I always had a problem in growing them because I loved to water them all the time, mainly once a week. In summer time here in Australia, particularly Sydney, the average weather is about 30 to 40°C and the humidty is about 30%. That is why it was important for me to find the best mix where there is a good balance between airflow and water retention to create an optimum environment for my succculents to grow. Finding the right medium was difficult and challenging because here in australia, akadama and kanuma are not available. Luckily, I have a good friend who also loves growing succulents. We had the same desire of finding the right components to create the best media for the growth of our plants and that's how we created Mineraland Gritty Mix.

Some countries only use what's available in there local nursery. My business partner and I initially started importing akadama, kanuma and maifan stones. A lot of people kept asking me if I had other types of medium. I would ask them, "Where did u hear that?" and they always answered that it's from overseas. Each country has their own kind of medium because we all have different stones and minerals available to us. They use what's available and what works best with their climate.

But then comes Japan, the one country that produces all sorts of media that make plants grow amazingly fast. As they say, some succulents grow slow because they dont have enough nutrients. My program is to grow them as fast as I can which is the reason why I water them once a week. I tried different ratios in my mix until I was finally able to get it right. The mixture of using akadama, kanuma and mineraland gritty mix (greenzeolite, pumice, scoria, diatomite, maifan stone and vermiculite). Course size or grade size is also important. I always use the same size (3-5mm )if the pot is more than 100mm and 1-4mm on a pot less than 100mm.

In terms of watering, I mostly water in the afternoon or sunset but I check the weather forecast first. If the temperature in the next 4 days is over 35°C then I wont water. I will skip watering then wait after 3 days then water heavily like watering twice as I only use a jerry can.

I hope this little bit of information helps anyone who comes across it.
